It’s the most wonderful time of the year for commercials. Check out the team’s favorite holiday ads below!
Margie Robinson — “Hershey Kisses Bells” Hershey’s
This commercial always rang in the holidays for me. It’s simple, cheerful, and infectious without any of the glitz and glitter of other campaigns. I always fall in love with that cute little kiss ringing it’s heart out in the end. The red, green and silver foil wrappers have become synonymous with the holidays — even in Grandma’s candy dish in mid-July.
Fun fact: This commercial has aired each holiday season since 1989, making it the longest running Hershey commercial ever.
Will Stott — “Come Together” H&M
Even though it’s more of a short film than a traditional TV ad, there are a few things about this holiday spot that make it memorable. I’m a big Wes Anderson fan, and this piece was filmed very much in his style, complete with tracking shots, perspective lines, and a focus on the minutia of each scene.
But what I think really makes this ad successful is that all of the actors are wearing H&M’s holiday clothing line, but the only focus on their clothing comes from the scene where everyone is getting out of their train cars. The ad is hardly even about the clothes, but Anderson’s attention to detail helps showcase the clothing line alongside the story.
Ryan Connolly — “Snowman” Campbell’s
This is a very nostalgic video for me, I remember seeing this commercial as a kid. I think Campbell’s did a great job of representing cold and comfort that could make any child want a bowl a soup.
Also, who leaves their kid outside that long? Terrible parenting. This wouldn’t fly today.
Chris Gorman — “Brother & Sister” Folgers
This iconic commercial from 2009 tells the heartfelt story of traveling a long distance to be home for the holidays. And also, maybe being in love with your sibling.
The internet has given this commercial a life of its own — including spoofs from Daniel Tosh, Chelsea Handler, and about 20 documented fan fiction stories. What’s the actual meaning? Here’s what Matthew Alan, the brother from the commercial, thinks of it.
Logan Livers — “O Tannenpalm” Corona Extra
It doesn’t really feel like Christmas until I see this commercial. It’s one of those evergreen commercials, like the Hershey’s and Campbell’s spots, that just never goes out of style. Plus, it’s a great combination of their brand identity and the holiday season.
Ryan Rothman — “Man on the Moon” John Lewis
I’ve always appreciated how the John Lewis commercials use a perfect combination of music, a well-paced storyline, and great cinematography to make their commercials feel less like an ad and more like a short film — a really touching one at that. But… if the #ManOnTheMoon was living up there without a space suit, wouldn’t he be dead? Sorry to ruin the holiday spirit, folks.
Christian Andrew — “Hot Dr. Pepper” Dr. Pepper
Nothing says Happy Holidays like a piping hot glass of Dr. Pepper with a lemon. It truly was a different time when copywriters and art directors had all the time in the world to get their ideas out, because they weren’t competing for eyes with smartphones, social media, or even cable TV. A different time when Americans enjoyed the holiday favorite of the proud crowd!
Lauren Cook — “Catch” Coca-Cola
Coke has a way of producing commercials that pull at your heart strings. Even though I’m not a soda drinker, I still am aware of the brand and what they sell because their fun and sentimental messages always capture my attention.
