OK, Let’s Review: June Recap

Once a month we like to compile a list of our favorite social media stories from the past few weeks and share them again with you so you never miss a thing — even when you’re not logged in. What happened in June? Let’s review.

So, What’s New?

Pinterest and Instagram are simplifying shopping for those who use the apps for browsing and making purchases. Users will be able to “buy now” directly through Pinterest’s Buyable Pins, and new Instagram buttons allow users to take direct action through the app’s ads.

Pinterest also added verified accounts to its platform to make locating specific (and real) pages of brands and public figures easier and faster. Just look for the little red check.

Mayorships are back! After Foursquare split itself in two last summer and spinoff app Swarm was born, mayorship rivalries became limited to only you and your friends. Now, we’re back to the good old days of competing for the crown against everyone.

Twitter introduced autoplay videos this month. While this may technically boost views for brands, many users aren’t too thrilled about the update. If you’re in that club, here’s a pro tip: Shut autoplay off in your Twitter settings to save data and prevent your phone speakers from unexpectedly exploding with sudden blasts of sound.

Twitter has lifted its 140-character limit — on direct messages anyway. Starting next month, you’ll be able to make your DMs as long as you like.

If you haven’t checked Instagram on your desktop lately, you may want to take a quick peek. The website’s redesign more closely mimics the mobile app layout with bigger photos and a cleaner look.

Back in the app, Instagram’s added several new dimensions to its Explore feature. Users can still search by specific hashtag, but the new update also offers trending hashtag suggestions, along with popular photo spots and trending events — making it easy to live vicariously through everyone at next year’s NBA finals or Bonnaroo.

You’re likely following several of your favorite news websites on Facebook, but now it will be easier to keep up with your favorite writers too. The new Author Tag will allow users to opt in to updates from the same writer in the future.

As the self-proclaimed “home court for the 2014-2015 NBA season,” it’s no surprise that Twitter was the best place to keep up with the Cavs and Warriors during this month’s NBA Finals. From June 4 to June 17, tweets about the finals were viewed 7.6 billion times on Twitter and across the web. Check out more stats and highlights on Twitter’s blog.

Tumblr’s new search filters help you beat all your coworkers to the punch of finding the funniest GIF first. Thanks, Tumblr. Our office chat rooms just got really competitive.
