Once a month we like to compile a list of our favorite social media stories from the past few weeks and share them again with you so you never miss a thing — even when you’re not logged in. What happened in March? Let’s review.
So, what’s new?
Facebook Messenger’s newest feature has created utter [March] madness in our office. Compete with friends in the now-not-so-secret “Messenger Ball” by typing a basketball emoji into a chat thread. We’re all out to beat Ruth’s high score of 30.
Instagram became the latest app to ditch its chronological timeline. It’s now in the process of rolling out an algorithmic feed similar to Twitter’s. This caused a similar stir among users — especially brands. Shortly after the announcement, brands everywhere totally panicked started asking followers to turn on notifications in an effort to save themselves from getting lost in the Instabyss.
And thanks to another update, those notifications are now available on the desktop, and so is the Explore feature. We’re pretty sure it’s only a matter of time before Instagram and Facebook completely morph into one platform.
In addition to enabling web notis and web exploring, Instagram’s also enabling longer videos. Users will soon be able to share videos up to 60 seconds long instead of 15. For brands, that means longer video ads, and for users, we’re hoping it means more video-editing tools in the near future.
Pinterest is taking DIY to a whole ‘nother level. This month it introduced “how-to” pins that make step-by-step home projects even simpler.
Snapchat launched more messaging options with what it’s calling Chat 2.0 — but that update came with a whole slew of other new features too. The “chat” portion of the app now contains a ton of goofy stickers you can send to friends, as well as better live-video connections. The additional auto-advance feature lets users catch up with every new snap story in one continuous stream.
Swarm made another big update this month too with Swarm 4.0 — which now allows users to track their own stats. Users can see which how many pizza places they’ve tried in the past few months and which friends they’ve been hanging out with most.
Twitter turned 10 this month. The platform celebrated its birthday with the #LoveTwitter hashtag and a cool video about the big moments it’s been a part of all over the world in its first decade.
Starting in ???????? on 3/21 and moving across the ????, we thank you for 10 incredible years.
