Once a month we like to compile a list of our favorite social media stories from the past few weeks and share them again with you so you never miss a thing — even when you’re not logged in. What happened in May? Let’s review.
So, What’s New?
A highlight of yesterday’s Google I/O was Now on Tap, a new feature that can conduct Google Now searches inside of other apps. Google Now returns search queries with actionable data and cards rather than simple links, and Now on Tap makes it possible from anywhere on your Android phone.
Pinterest just got even craftier. The platform teamed up with Buffer this month to give brands pin-scheduling capabilities, making it possible to keep their communities engaged during peak periods of interaction, even if their social media managers are out of the office.
Speaking of Pinterest, it seems Google is taking a page out of the platform’s book. Google+ is expanding its features by launching Collections, which allows users to categorize their posts by interest and help others easily find and follow them.
Instagram’s Layout has arrived on Android. We played around with the PicStitch competitor earlier this month, along with a few other photo editing apps.
Hashtag smiley poo. Instagram is also now allowing users to include emojis in the hashtags that accompany their photos. The app update added a few more filters to its lineup as well.
Reserve a table via Facebook. The latest buy button is designed help users reach local businesses directly from their Facebook ads.
Have you tuned in to the talk about live video? Live-streaming apps like Periscope and Meerkat have been exploding since SXSW in February. We tested both apps this month to get a better feel for their temporary transportation capabilities.
Auto-play is almost here on Twitter. The platform plans to launch self-starting video by the end of June.
LinkedIn’s new, beefed up analytics are great news for us and for influencers looking to make stronger connections with those in their network. The new features will allow publishers to access more insights and review who has been engaging with their posts.
Twitter and Google have finally teamed up. Tweets are now fed straight to Google and displayed in card format.
Would making YouTube ads more interactive make more people click? Apparently it’s worth a try. Similarly to other platforms that are adding buy button options to ads, Google’s TrueView click-to-buy ads will direct users from YouTube to a place to purchase.
Look out, Facebook creeps. Messenger is now providing users with more background info on random non-friends when they slip messages into inboxes.
Don Draper, we miss you already. Mad Men may have wrapped up this month, but we’ll always find agency life at SC&P relatable for a few reasons.
Welcome, Mr. President. BO joined Twitter this month! Oh, you were already following @BarackObama? That’s run by his staff. @POTUS is the real deal, real dude. The president racked up more 180,000 followers in his 40 minutes online and more than 2 million by the weekend.
This may be our personal favorite — Facebook now has GIF capability!
