Comedy Social Club: The Funny Business of Comedians on Social

My favorite thing about the people of Hurrdat is that we all have a sense of humor. Every single person on our team is funny — how lucky are we? From poking fun at social media fails to finding the perfect auto-response on our Slack account, our team is at the top of its giggle game. As comedy fans ourselves (how else can you get through a car ride back from the Black Hills other than with a Spotify playlist full of Rory Scovel and John Mulaney?), we decided to head to this year’s Crom Comedy Festival in Omaha and talk to comedians about another mutual interest of ours: social media.

Stand-up comedy has a lot of the same values as social media: storytelling, connecting with your audience, being agile enough to think on your toes, and needing a contingency plan for when the hecklers come out. Twitter is a place for comedians to test out new material (and hope it doesn’t get stolen), and expand their digital networks. We wanted to know how some of the top comedians at Crom use social media, any of their pet peeves in the social sphere, and how they handle the Twitter trolls. Here are a few we got to chat with:

Nate Bargatze (@natebargatze)

If people still use the term “good ol’ boys,” that would be Nate. We love his unassuming humor and the great advice he bestowed on us for dealing with those pesky jerks on the Internet. He just released his one-hour special, “Full Time Magic,” on Comedy Central in May.

Adam Cayton-Holland (@CaytonHolland)

This guy knows how to mobilize his Twitter following. As one-third of the comedy trio The Grawlix, Adam has carved a name out for himself with late-night appearances, his “My Dining Room Table” podcast, and an incredible beard. Keep an eye out for Adam and the other Grawlix members in “Those Who Can’t” on TruTV, airing in 2016.

Dave Ross (@davetotheross)

Dave is a passionate fella who can perfectly articulate exactly what Internet trolls are doing in between writing their nasty comments (it’s eating bowls full of gummy worms, shown below). He’s part of the sketch group WOMEN, hosts the podcast “Terrified” on the Nerdist network, and appeared on the Charleston episode of “Drunk History.”

Chris Thayer (@christhayersays)

He’s a modern day cheese-pun savant. You may have heard him on “The Pete Holmes Show” or “You Made it Weird.” He’s also been on killer festivals like Riot LA and Bridgetown Comedy Festival.

The Puterbaugh Sisters (@puterbaughs and @Dputerbaugh)

Think back to that obnoxious banter between Rory and Lorelai on “Gilmore Girls.” Imagine that, but tolerable and without the CW’s language filter, and you’ve got the Puterbaugh Sisters. They’ve been back-and-forthing for years in Chicago on their monthly variety show, “Entertaining Julia.”

Josh Androsky (@shutupandrosky)

He will forever be known as the creator of our favorite office quote and star of our go-to GIF (see below), along with being the owner of a dope collection of Hawaiian shirts. You’ve probably read one of Josh’s articles for Vice or caught him on “The Price As Right” as a skateboarding rabbi.

Andy Sell (@andy_sell)

Andy’s bio states, “Andy Sell is a comedian from Los Angeles who is lovable and has a killer mustache.” It’s 100 percent true. You also may have seen him in videos for Buzzfeed or Fuse.

Take a look at our first video below, and check back every week for a new one.
