At its core, social media keeps us connected with people, and there’s no better group of people to stay connected with than our favorite teams. For me, that means following my favorite soccer teams, players, and fans. On Twitter, Instagram, and even Snapchat, there is an abundance of soccer on social media.
Here are some of the reasons I love following soccer on so many social platforms:
Live updates
Sometimes you just can’t watch your favorite game. Maybe you’re at work, the game is in a different time zone, or the game isn’t on TV. This is why I love Twitter. With Twitter I can keep up with my favorite MLS team: Sporting KC. When I want to keep tabs on the English Premier League, I can scroll back through Twitter instead of waking up at 6 a.m.
Following tournaments
Social media, particularly Twitter and Instagram, played a big part in my experience with the Women’s World Cup this summer. More so than relying on TV or checking an article, social media reminded me what time the game was so I could make sure I was watching. The final match between the U.S. Women’s National Team and Japan was the “most-watched soccer match in U.S. history.” I’m sure some of those fans were relying on social media to remind them what time the game was on too.
Moral support
The American Outlaws are a nationwide supporters group that was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. The proud fans organize pre-game marches and tailgates. Inside the stadium, the Outlaws are a reliable group with loud cheers and chants. @USSoccer and @USSoccer_WNT, the official accounts of the U.S. teams, are both great sources to follow during games. But the Outlaws can be a bit snarkier.
During #USAvBRA on Sept. 8, and during other games I’ve watched, I intermittently (or frequently) checked Twitter. I like watching and knowing that I’m not the only one yelling (or cursing) at my screen.
Sometimes, you just want someone yelling (typing in all caps) when you feel that way too.
GIFs! (And other videos)
Another wonderful thing about keeping up with soccer via social media is the GIFs.
Like that time goalie Brad Guzan was exceptionally awesome:
Or when Clint Dempsey made that face:
I’m not the world’s biggest soccer fan, but I love to follow the beautiful game. Social media helps me do that.
